The official launch of the construction of the main Chisinau-Str\u0103\u0219eni-C\u0103l\u0103ra\u0219i water pipeline, marked by the installation of the first pipes, took place on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The event was attended by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Mr. Vladimir Bolea, German Ambassador, Mrs. Margret Uebber, representatives of the German Development Bank KfW, beneficiary authorities from the districts of Straseni, Calarasi and Chisinau municipality, along with members of civil society and development partners.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This landmark event marks the start of a major infrastructure project in the central region of the Republic of Moldova - a water transmission pipeline over 50 kilometers long, which will connect Chisinau with the cities of Str\u0103\u0219eni and C\u0103l\u0103ra\u0219i. The project aims to ensure access to safe drinking water for the inhabitants of Str\u0103\u0219eni municipality and the city of C\u0103l\u0103ra\u0219i, who currently have limited water sources, making the supply of drinking water a pressing need for the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The construction of the pipeline is part of a wider regional development project of the Moldovan Government, which aims to improve the quality and continuity of water supply services for the inhabitants of both districts. In addition, the project foresees the construction of new water distribution networks and the modernization of existing ones in the districts of Str\u0103\u0219eni and C\u0103l\u0103ra\u0219i. At the same time, the municipal water and sewage enterprises in the two cities have been reorganized into joint-stock companies to become efficient and sustainable regional operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project also aims to strengthen the capacity of water operators in Chisinau, Straseni and Calarasi so that they can sustainably manage the new infrastructure. The initiative will significantly reduce the risks of water-borne diseases in connected communities and villages in the districts of Str\u0103\u0219eni and C\u0103l\u0103ra\u0219i. Increased security of drinking water supply will contribute to improving the quality of life in the targeted region. Also, switching to the use of surface water from the Nistru River will help prevent overuse of groundwater resources, thus contributing to the protection of natural resources and their sustainable management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova<\/strong>:  \"As the climate changes and droughts become more frequent, water becomes an increasingly valuable resource. For decades, investment in water networks has been modest and today only 65% of the country's localities have tap water. In the last four years, we have accelerated our efforts - we have built about 1000 km of aqueducts in all districts of the country. We aim to ensure access to quality water in all localities by 2030,\" said the Head of State.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vladimir Bolea, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development<\/strong>:  \"Today's event is about continuing the process of transformation taking place in the Republic of Moldova, a multilateral transformation, and on the infrastructure segment in particular. Today's project is a clear proof that Moldova can and succeeds in building itself day by day, through strong local and international partnerships.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margret Uebber<\/strong>, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Moldova<\/strong>: \"With Germany's total involvement in the water sector exceeding \u20ac95 million in grants, we remain firmly committed to supporting the Republic of Moldova's path towards regional development, EU alignment and improved public services. In addition to supporting up to 75,000 citizens in the districts of Str\u0103\u0219eni and C\u0103l\u0103ra\u0219i through this project, we are also contributing to the modernization of the water supply and sanitation systems in Cahul and Chisinau. These projects are a concrete example of how cooperation between Germany and the Republic of Moldova translates into real and tangible benefits for communities.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lorenz Gessner, KfW representative: <\/strong>\"This important project represents one of the largest water regionalization efforts in Moldova and a significant step towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation. Through this investment, we are working with the Government of Moldova to ensure that citizens in central Moldova have access to reliable and safe water services, which will lead to better living conditions in the region.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"With this project, we are not only building a 50 km long aqueduct, but also contributing to the regionalization of public services and to the improvement of the quality of life for tens of thousands of people in the districts of Straseni and Calarasi\", he said <\/em>Ion P\u00eenzari, Director of RDA Center<\/strong>. <\/em>He assured the event participants of his firm commitment to the smooth implementation of all project activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project \"Improvement of water infrastructure in Central Moldova\" is implemented by the Government of the Republic of Moldova, through the Centru Regional Development Agency, with the support of the German Federal Government through the German Development Bank KfW. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
